Marlins Rock Rookie For Win Over Jays

There’s something about nterleague play that just doesn’t seem to agree with the Blue Jays.

After being swept by the Colorado Rockies earlier this season, Toronto’s struggles with the National League have continued in Florida, the latest of which came in the form of a 8-2 loss to the Marlins Saturday night.

The Jays have lost five straight against NL clubs this year and nine of their last 10 stretching back to 2005.

Starting pitching continued to be a problem for the Blue Birds, who turned to rookie hurler Casey Janssen (5-5). That proved to be a mistake, as the right-hander had his worst performance in 11 appearances this year, going just three-plus innings while allowing seven runs and 11 hits.

The Marlins on the other hand had no such issues, as their starter Brian Moehler (5-5) allowed just two runs on five hits while striking out four. Florida is one of the hottest teams in the National League, winners in 17 of their last 23.

The big hits from Marlins came off the bat of Mike Jacobs, who hit a two-run shot off Janssen, and Miguel Cabrera, who got the scoring started with an RBI single in the first and reached base on two other occasions.

The Jays had very little offence to speak of, save a Vernon Wells RBI double that momentarily put them in the lead early on. But that lead was short lived as the rest of the club could do very little at the dish, including catcher Bengie Molina who went 0-for-4 to snap a career-high 15-game hit streak.

Toronto will be eager to salvage the last game of the series on Sunday, and will have a good chance to do just that when they send ace Roy Halladay (8-1) to the hill against Marlins rookie Josh Johnson (5-4).
