Edenwold Wins 147th Queen’s Plate

In the first leg of Canada’s horse racing Triple Crown, Edenwold was simply spectacular.

The 16-1 long shot proved to be hardly that, as he passed Sterwins down the stretch to capture the $1 million Queen’s Plate and set up what would be an exciting, albeit improbable attempt at the highly sought after feat.

But even if the Triple Crown isn’t in Edenwold’s future, the win was still significant for a number of reasons. To begin with it was the first time in the 147-year history of the event that a female trainer has produced a winner, a certain thrill for caregiver Josie Carroll.

However, the 48-year-old Toronto native downplayed the historical significance of Sunday’s victory.

“My owners have always respected hard work and merit,” Carroll said. “To play the gender card, I think, is taking away from the other trainers in the race who work equally hard and are very talented.”

“But, it’s great and I’ll take it.”

Still, that wasn’t the only first of the day, as the win was also number one at the prestigious race for owners Jim and Alice Sapara.

Edenwold started in the first of 13 posts for the race, but the 12 competitors were mostly non-factors as the contenders bore down around the final turn.

Much credit is also due Edenwold jockey Emile Ramsammy, who pushed his horse beautifully when the pair made its move late. It was the second Plate victory for Ramsammy.

For their efforts, team Edenwold earned the $600,000 winner’s share by finishing the 1 and ¼ mile track in an unofficial time of 2:05:30 on what was widely considered a fast track. But fast track or not, Edenwold was still the fastest on it.
