Two homers by Lyle Overbay led the Toronto Blue Jays to a one-sided 8-1 trouncing of the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night.
Overbay also drove in a season-high five runs to help Toronto continue their winning ways, taking their fourth straight and moving 11 games above .500.
“I’m just taking good swings more consistently,” said Overbay. “I’ve been getting pitches to hit … it’s just a matter of taking those good swings and trusting (them).”
While Overbay was blasted pitches, Casey Janssen was tossing them with uncanny precision, befuddling the Phillies over six innings.
Janssen (6-6) struck out three and walked two to end a personal three-game losing streak.
He got out of a serious jam in the first when he struck out Aaron Rowand with the bases loaded.
“It was a big out,” said Janssen. “You don’t want to fall behind in the first inning. The team’s on a roll and I just wanted to keep it going.”
“As long as they keep us in the game, we’re going to score some runs and give them every chance to win a ballgame,” said Overbay. “That’s what we ask of them, and they’ve done a great job. Hopefully it’ll continue.”
