Rain Couldn’t Dampen Spirits At Junior Carnival

Hundreds of children donned their biggest and brightest costumes and skipped, danced and walked along the streets in the Jane and Finch area for the sixth annual Junior Carnival, which was one of the events in association with the Toronto Caribbean Carnival, formerly known as Caribana.

The kids, between the ages of four and 16, were having so much fun that they didn’t mind getting a little wet in the afternoon rain.

“This is what it’s all about. Caribana is to be having fun and letting everything go and I think the rain is perfect,” nine-year-old participant Keyra Bes said.

Some of the costumes required some serious strength to show off – some of the incredible outfits weighed up to 45 kilograms and had multi-metre wingspans.

The Junior Carnival wasn’t always a part of the annual Caribbean Carnival celebrations. Officers from 31 Division started it as a way to bring the Jane-Finch community together and the effort has been an enormous success.

“We wanted to get together and celebrate the diverse community that exists in our area,” Insp. Mark Fenton explained.

The children’s event is just a preview of the great things to come over the next few weeks. The highlight of the Caribbean Carnival events – the annual parade – hits Lake Shore on Aug. 5.
