That was the tragic scenario that greeted a homeowner in Baldwin, Ontario north of Stouffville, Monday.
A Cessna clipped some hydro wires and a tree after the pilot pulled up quickly when he realized he couldn’t make a safe landing, then bounced off a house and crashed.
Jim Riddell was one of the witnesses who rushed to the rescue. “There was a lady from the house at the airplane, hit the roof of the house before it crashed into the ground, and she was already there with the pilot. He was out on the ground. He obviously had severe trauma to him.”
But none of them could help the stricken pilot. He was airlifted to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre with life-threatening injuries, but died several hours later.
Transport Canada is investigating the crash, which took place at around 10:20am, but early reports suggest the victim overshot a runway.
