Chien-Ming Wang won his fifth straight start, pitching eight shutout innings to lead the New York Yankees to a 7-2 win over the outgunned Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday night in the Big Apple.
Wang picked up where he left off after throwing a brilliant two-hitter against Tampa Bay last Friday in his first career shutout. He had little trouble with Toronto’s power hitters, running his scoreless streak to 18 innings.
Wang didn’t let the blistering heat of a 36 C night alter his concentration. Despite the conditions, he looked cool on the mound, allowing just four hits while striking out three.
A key sixth inning made all the difference for the Yanks, with Alex Rodriguez’s two hits blowing the game open.
Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada added homers for the AL East-leading Yankees, who improved to 10-1-1 in their last 12 series.
Ex-Yankee Ted Lilly worked 5 1/3 innings, giving up five runs and 10 hits.
