The frantic search for a missing 5-year-old girl came to a happy conclusion on Wednesday night after police recovered the child unharmed a few hours after she was reported missing.
Laura Sue was last seen around 8pm at a Wellesley and Church playground with her father. A woman who had struck up a conversation with them earlier allegedly whisked her away, sparking the intense search.
Police were getting ready to issue an Amber Alert, when their hunt abruptly ended. At around 11:00pm the suspect and Laura Sue were both spotted by an alert officer near Bay and Wellesley.
“It’s wonderful news,” said Insp. Mary Metcaffe as the search was called off. “We’ve had the safe return of this five-year-old little girl, and (she is at) 51 Division right now being reacquainted with her parents. She’s safe and sound.”
She thanked the community for aiding in the search.
“We also would like to take this opportunity to thank the community in the surrounding area that was very overwhelming in their support in the initial search and checking of apartments and park grounds. It was wonderful.”
A 35-year-old woman, who’s not related to the family, has been charged with abduction. Her name isn’t being released and cops won’t say what the motive behind the incident might have been.
