Jays Edge D-Rays

A 4-3 win over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays made Roy Halladay the first 15-game winner in the major leagues on Tuesday night.

Toronto’s ace pitcher gave up just two runs and six hits in seven innings, handing the struggling D-Rays their seventh straight loss.   Halladay also struck out three and walked one while improving his record against Tampa Bay to 4-1.   Going into the game he was tied at 14 wins with Detroit’s Justin Verlander and Boston’s Curt Schilling.

“It gives you a psychological lift when he’s out there,” Toronto manager John Gibbons said. “You feel good going into the game.”

“He’s usually always in control,” Gibbons added. “Very rarely is he not. He’ll give up some runs here and there, but games don’t collapse on him.”

Toronto had a huge eighth inning, taking the lead when Alex Rios smacked a tie-breaking RBI single and John McDonald added a run scoring single to put Toronto up 4-2.

B.J. Ryan cemented the win when he struck out three in the ninth for his 27th save in 31 chances.

Tampa Bay is now a laughable 8-22 since the all-star break while the Jays continue their up-and-down season.
