One night after an already infamous dust up that no one seems willing to admit even happened, Blue Jay fans welcomed one of the suspected combatants, Manager John Gibbons, with a rousing round of applause when he visited the mound during Toronto’s 4-3 win against the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday.
“I haven’t had that much applause in a while,” said Gibbons.
Gibbons walked out to have a chat with A.J. Burnett in the seventh inning, and in great contrast to the incident with Ted Lilly, he amicably agreed to leave Burnett in the game. Despite giving up another run in a close game, Burnett walked away with the win, his fourth straight, improving to 4-1 in August.
While he was handling the duties on the mound, Vernon Wells was taking care of business at the plate, hitting a two-run homer.
B.J. Ryan got the final four outs for his 28th save of the season.
“Our defence the last two days has been unbelievable,” said Gibbons.
“That’s what it takes to win, especially in tight ballgames. Those are sometimes the difference maker. That’s where I think we lacked a bit in the beginning of the season and it cost us a little bit.”
