Thousands of children are returning to school this week with backpacks full of new school supplies and Toronto Police are reminding them to be extra cautious with them.
But it’s not the paper, pencils and binders they’re going to have to keep an eye on, it’s the high-tech gadgets would-be thieves are after – things like iPods, cell phones, and other hand-held devices.
Authorities say recent and past crime trends show that criminals tend to target students for their electronic gadgets – from MP3 players and phones to hand-held computers and video game players.
These robberies usually occur close to campus or during lunch time and police are advising students to take some precautions to protect their property.
Here’s a look at what Toronto Police recommend:
- Keep your cash, music players, cell phones or other valuables close to you and out of view,
- If you don’t need it at school, think twice about taking it to school,
- Be aware of who is around you,
- Report any criminal or suspicious incident to police and your school,
- Try to stay in groups or with friends,
- Talk to the police officers in and around your schools; they are there for you,
- Record all serial numbers and keep that information in a safe place,
- Report any criminal or suspicious incident to police and your school officials.
