Yankees Move Closer To Clinching Division Title

The New York Yankees moved to within one win of their ninth straight American League East title after a 6-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night.

Bobby Abreu blasted a go-ahead two-run shot to dead centre in the seventh inning to propel the Yanks towards the title.   In tandem with the Minnesota Twins’ 7-3 win over the Boston Red Sox, the Yankees (92-59) clinched at least a tie for first.

The New York Mets clinched the NL East on Monday.

“This is amazing,” said Abreu. “I haven’t been in this situation in a long time and I’m just excited about it. I’m going to enjoy it.”

The Jays were officially eliminated before a robust crowd of 30,793 at Rogers Centre.

The Jays will be playing for pride only when the Yankees try to win the division Wednesday night against ace starter Roy Halladay.

“We’re facing, to me, the game’s best pitcher,” Yankees centre-fielder Johnny Damon said about Halladay. “It would be nice to clinch with these guys here.”

The Jays proved themselves rather ineffectual at the plate, failed to score with the bases loaded in the second and fifth.
