The Toronto Blue Jays took possession of second place in the AL East Monday night after earning a 5-0 win over the Boston Red Sox in their final match before hometown fans at Rogers Centre.
Shaun Marcum took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and Alex Rios tagged a three-run homer to give Jays’ fans a measure of satisfaction in an otherwise botched season.
“Obviously second place is better than third place but it’s still not where we want to be,” said Wells. “I guess it’s a good consolation prize.”
Wells gave loyal fans a glimmer of hope, hinting that he wasn’t anxious to leave Toronto. He will be a free agent after the 2007 season and if the Blue Jays sign him soon he’ll likely be dealt elsewhere.
“I see no reason why it would be my last game (in Toronto as a Blue Jay),” he said. “I want to be here next year for sure, I want to be here for a lot longer than that. I think we have a chance to do something special next year.”
Marcum (3-4), a rookie fighting to get noticed, couldn’t help but garner some attention after flirting with a no-hitter heading into the sixth inning. Unfortunately, Alex Cora’s single up the middle ended his run.
“A lot of guys are taking a lot of pride in this trying to finish ahead of the Red Sox and put our name No. 2 behind the Yankees for now and see what we can do next year,” said Marcum.
