Fire Crews Get Control Of Blaze Just In Time

Quick-thinking firefighters were able to get to the source of a downtown fire and put it out before it did serious damage.

Crews were called to Albany Ave., near Dupont and Bathurst Sts., after receiving reports that someone smelled smoke. After about a half an hour of searching, crews were able to pinpoint the source of the flames at a house on Albany.

Residents were fast asleep but were alerted to the fire and managed to get out safely.

Fire Chief Steve Nyhl praised his captain’s investigative work in tracking down the blaze.

“We were able to locate the fire. I think in this case, we got the fire down in good time,” Nyhl said. “If it hadn’t have been for this captain, we might have lost both buildings.”

For Cpt. Dave Cranswick getting to the source of the flames was a matter of figuring out which way the wind was blowing from.

“With the wind the way it was, it was drifting it over to Bathurst Street and sometimes when that happens you don’t realize,” he said. “We kept searching until we found the cause of it.”

Liz, an area resident, said she heard the commotion outside and it caused her to get up.

“I heard everyone outside and when I was getting ready to come out (fire crews) banged on the doors,” she said.

Roofers had apparently been doing work on the house recently – the flames were growing when firefighters arrived on scene and it appears they were able to keep the damage to a minimum.
