Progressive Conservative Leader John Tory has managed to drop 33 lbs in just two months by following an 800-calorie-a-day diet. At 6′ and 215lbs, Tory was considered overweight, but after shedding the excess fat he’s now in a healthy weight category.
“I was beginning to look like the Pillsbury Dough Boy,” the 52-year-old politician said.
But it wasn’t just his pudgy appearance that spurred him to take up the battle of the bulge it was a health wake up call when he was told he was pre-diabetic.
“My blood sugar was actually quite high. It never had been before and after I was on the diet for three weeks, my blood sugar came right down,” the politician explained.
So how does a man who stands at 6′ manage to drop so much weight so quickly?
“You’ve got to like lettuce to be on this diet and lose weight,” Tory explained.
The typical John Tory lunch consists of a lot of lettuce topped with lemon juice and a little bit of tuna.
Ontario Health Minister George Smitherman didn’t think a daily caloric intake of only 800 calories was a good idea – the healthy intake for a man Tory’s size is roughly 2,500 calories a day.
“Obviously he’s not using his brain much and he’s not working too hard if he can function on 800 calories a day,” he quipped.
But the Conservative leader said the diet has done wonders for him and said carrying that extra weight was like lugging a case of beer around.
“I think it’s healthy because I can tell you I’ve never felt better,” he said.
