NATO Soldier Killed In Afghan Suicide Bombing

A NATO soldier and eight civilians are dead following a suicide bombing in southern Afghanistan.

The car bomber struck a military convoy in Kandahar Friday, the blast shattering the vehicle into pieces and damaging about a dozen shopfronts.

Aside from the nine deaths, a NATO soldier and another eight people were wounded in the explosion. Two children were among those hurt according to local doctor Masood Khan.

The nationalities of the soldiers involved weren’t released, but Kandahar region is where 2,300 Canadian troops have been based as part of the NATO-led mission.

According to the allied forces, though fighting with the Taliban has decreased in recent weeks the incidences of suicide attacks have gone up. On Thursday, NATO and Afghan forces clashed with militants in the south and it’s believed up to 20 insurgents were killed.

Meanwhile, a suicide bomber ran at a vehicle carrying Afghan troops in the eastern portion of the country, killing himself and wounding two soldiers and 14 civilians.

There have been 40 Canadian soldiers and one Canadian diplomat killed since the mission began in 2002.
