LCBO To Start Charging Deposit On Bottles

In February the LCBO will start charging a 10- or 20-cent deposit on wine and liquor bottles in an attempt to boost recycling.

And though consumers will get that money back, they may have to go out of their way to get it. The bottles can’t simply be delivered back to the liquor store from where they were purchased, but to the nearest location of ‘The Beer Store’ for recycling.

The province hopes the deposits will increase the amount of recycled wine and spirits containers by 30 to 40 per cent.

A $0.20 cent charge will be added to the price of liquor in glass bottles, while Tetra Paks and containers greater than 630 millilitres will be dinged with a $0.10 surcharge.

Ontario has a contract with ‘The Beer Store’ to take empties. It’s expected that in the first year of the new program the government will pay $15 million to handle the recycled containers.
