Fire has claimed a life in Alliston, Ont.
A woman is dead after the blaze broke out at about 1:30am in an apartment above a variety store on the town’s main street.
She wasn’t able to make it out of the residence in time and was pronounced dead at the scene.
“We had a structure fire in the main street of Alliston. One victim from the commercial building. Unfortunately that victim has succumbed to her injuries,” confirmed Chief Dan Heydon of the New Tecumseth Fire Department.
There’s no word on what caused the blaze in the town northwest of the city, but Victoria St. East between Church and Centre Sts. was closed for the initial investigation.
It’s unclear how long the road will remain closed, but the Fire Marshal was expected to attend the scene to look for evidence.
Foul play isn’t suspected, and an autopsy will be conducted on the victim Tuesday.
