Last week an eight-foot, 250-kilogram sculpture of the Greek mythological figure Atlas was stolen from the metal design company PM Designs, leaving the statue’s owners and police wondering just how someone pulled off this outdoor art heist.
The metal creation was bolted down in six places and was supported by aircraft cable.
Michael Gimenez, CEO of PM Designs, believes some kind of crane was used to remove the heavy statue, which is a one-of-a-kind valued at $200,000 and which took a year and a half to create.
If you drive along Highway 400 near Finch, you’ve probably spotted the mythological man holding the globe over his head.
Police said they received a tip Tuesday that Atlas was spotted on a piece of property not far away.
When authorities arrived they discovered that the copper creation fit nicely into the design of the backyard it was allegedly found in, which had some copper pipes and a gazebo fitted with copper accents.
“Last night was probably the happiest moment in my life,” Gimenez said Wednesday.
Luis Gomes, 37, was arrested and charged with possession of property obtained by crime.
“It could carry a jail time and it could carry quite a substantial fine as well,” Det. Const. Tom Job said of the charge.
