Turkey With Pins Inside Prompts National Warning

The Kanata, Ont. individual was carving up the cooked bird when he discovered metal pins inside. Fortunately no one had begun to eat the turkey so there were no injuries reported.

However police are investigating and both the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Manitoba-based Granny’s Poultry Cooperative have warned the public to be observant when preparing their holiday bird.

The affected product was a Granny’s ready-to-cook turkey and its label read: Best Before 06 DE 27 and Est No. 137. It was sold at a Loblaws location in Kanata, but Granny’s brand birds are sold across the country.

Experts believe it was an isolated incident – still they inspected more than 500 turkeys from the retail store and a Manitoba warehouse to be safe.

Signs of turkey tampering include strange tears or holes in packaging, extra material while slicing or meat discolouration.

If consumers do feel their bird has been tampered with, they should contact the CFIA at 1-800-442-2342.
