Team Canada goalie Carey Price helped his nation bask in gold medal glory with his 25 save performance against Russia on Friday, but he also made quite an impression on the team he’ll likely suit up for in the future — the Montreal Canadiens.
Price, who was named M.V.P. at the world junior championship, was drafted by the Habs fifth overall in 2005 and management was beaming after watching his stellar performance throughout the tourney.
“I’m happy for him and for the fans back in Montreal,” said Trevor Timmins, Montreal’s director of scouting and player development. “They got to see one of our best prospects shine at the international level.
“Hopefully, he’ll help us win a Stanley Cup one day.”
Price, a 6’3″ Vancouver native, went undefeated, with a perfect 6-0 record against tough international competition and literally saved the day with a slew of remarkable saves in overtime and the shootout against the U.S.
The Canadiens franchise were criticized by some for taking the goalie ahead of some solid snipers, but Timmins believes they made the right choice, and the tournament only helps solidify that perception.
“We thought at the time that at No. 5, he was the last player left who could be a solid backbone of a team, a franchise goaltender,” said Timmins. “We couldn’t let that opportunity pass.
“I think this will erase some doubts for the time being, but it’s his development at the NHL level that counts.”
But in this case, it appears the Price is definitely right.
