Babel, Dreamgirls, The Departed Could Be Winners At Golden Globes

It’s anyone’s guess which actors and films will walk away with a Golden Globe Monday night, with a Supremes-inspired musical, a Boston mob tale, and a globe-spanning ensemble piece among the frontrunners.

The Globes split films up into two categories – musical or comedy, and drama. Odds are on the musical Dreamgirls to win best film in the former category, though dark horses Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan and Little Miss Sunshine could rule the night.

Predicting best drama is also challenging – with the films The Queen, The Departed, and Babel all earning critical raves.

The winners in both categories will likely earn a best picture Oscar nomination when those are announced on Jan. 23.

Though wins are never a sure thing, the closest bet would be Helen Mirren as best actress in a drama for her role as Elizabeth II in The Queen. Forest Whitaker is seen as a strong contender in the best dramatic actor category for playing Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in The Last King Of Scotland. He faces competition from Peter O’Toole, seven times nominated for an Oscar, as a lecherous actor in Venus. Leonardo DiCaprio shows up twice in the same category – for his roles in The Departed and Blood Diamond.

“It’s a pretty fantastic feeling. I must say I’m pretty humbled and honoured by it all,” said DiCaprio, who wouldn’t speculate on an Oscar nomination. “It would be a great feeling. It really would. It’s one of those things, and I keep saying it but it’s the truth, I have no control over it. It’s not at all in my hands.”

The supporting acting and directing categories aren’t split up into genres at the Globes, meaning that the winners there are virtually assured an Oscar nod.

Up for supporting actress: Babel’s Adriana Barraza and Rinko Kikuchi, Cate Blanchett for Notes on a Scandal, Emily Blunt for The Devil Wears Prada, and Jennifer Hudson for Dreamgirls.

Supporting actor nominees include Ben Affleck for Hollywoodland, Eddie Murphy for Dreamgirls, Jack Nicholson and Mark Wahlberg for The Departed, and Brad Pitt for Babel.

Clint Eastwood is another double nominee, competing with himself for best director on the WWII companion films Letters From Iwo Jima and Flags Of Our Fathers. Stephen Frears is nominated for The Queen, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for Babel, and Martin Scorsese for The Departed.

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a former Globe winner, will present the evening’s final award, for best dramatic picture.

The awards are handed out at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills.
