Mirren, Whitaker Pick Up SAG Awards

Judging by the way the awards season has been going so far, it appears that Helen Mirren and Forest Whitaker are a shoo-ins for best actress/actor Oscars next month.

Academy Award honours are also looking good for Eddie Murphy and his “Dreamgirls” co-star Jennifer Hudson.

Mirren picked up two SAG awards Sunday, both for her portrayals of English queens  — Elizabeth I and II — and Forest Whitaker received the best actor nod for his work in “The Last King Of Scotland”.

It was also a big night for the cast of “Dreamgirls” with Eddie Murphy and co-star Jennifer Hudson picking up the best supporting actor/actress awards.

All four performers took home a Golden Globe earlier this month.

Murphy poked fun at Mirren’s reputation as a respected thespian as he accepted his award Sunday.

“What a tremendous honour to be recognized by one’s peers. I’ve been acting for some 25 years now and this is a tremendous honour,” said Murphy, talking in a British accent.

“No, I’m sorry, I feel goofy up here.”

Mirren had an incredible night, receiving honours for her work in both the made-for-TV “Elizabeth I” and the box office release “The Queen”.

“I’m so proud. I love this award more than any other award,” she said. “I think especially being a Brit, American film acting has always inspired us and influenced us and impressed us, or me, anyway. I’ve always looked to American film actors to teach me how to do it, basically.”

The actors of the quirky film “Little Miss Sunshine” took home the award for best cast.

Riding high off a Golden Globe win, America Ferrera also took home some hardware Sunday, picking up the best actress honour in a comedy series for her work in “Ugly Betty”.

And screen and stage legend Julie Andrews was presented with the lifetime achievement award.
