CN Strikers Say GO Transit Will Not Be Affected

Out of the nearly 3,000 CN workers currently on strike, 300 are stationed in the Greater Toronto Area, and most of them were out Sunday picketing despite freezing cold temperatures.
“The company makes an exorbitant amount of money and they treat us like garbage,” said 35-year CN veteran Doug Harasymiw.
CN employees are striking over pensions and working conditions, and about 100 of them are conductors who also staff GO trains, a fact that’s sparked concern for commuters who rely on the service.
But the good news is that the automated greeting from GO Transit Sunday warned riders to “please be advised that during the CN strike GO Transit service will not be affected.”
Still, it could be at some point. GO conductors are able to strike, they just need to provide 72 hours notice.
And in the event of a GO strike, officials admit there’s no chance buses can handle the roughly165,000 commuters the trains carry every day.
That harsh reality has many who rely on the service understandably concerned, despite the fact that some striking workers are adamant they will do everything possible to avoid affecting GO and its customers.
“Our issue is not with GO Transit, our issue is with CN,” promised CN striker Mike Vestrosi.
“We’re not going to stop the commuters from getting into work.”
