The man dubbed, the ‘balcony rapist’ is set for release after serving a 20 year sentence and there’s a small chance that he could end up back in Ontario .
Peter Callow, 52, will be a free man when he’s released from custody in Surrey , B.C. Friday.
Callow was found guilty of a string of sexual assaults on women in Toronto during the mid-1980s.
One of his victims, who accused police of using her as a bait, spoke out about his release.
“I think he’s done his time and I think that in watching him we are failing to watch and look at the bigger picture and the fact that a woman is raped every 17 minutes in this country,” she said.
The woman, known only as Jane Doe, launched a 1998 civil suit and was awarded $220,000 after alleging police didn’t do enough to warn her and other women that he was on the loose.
Despite fears that he’ll return to the G.T.A., Attorney General Michael Bryant assures it’s highly unlikely. A recognizance order prevents Callow from entering Ontario unless he gets permission from the courts, something that is rarely granted.
“Callow is an extremely dangerous individual, so we will do everything we can to protect the public from him, including making submissions to the court to ensure he never, ever steps foot in the province of Ontario,” Bryant said.
