Just three days shy of the four-year anniversary of the start of the U.S.-led war in Iraq , over 400 peace rallies sprung up around the globe.
And the anti-war sentiment was certainly felt on the streets of Toronto , as a downtown peace protest and march began in front of the U.S. Consulate
“There’s a saying that silence is complicity and so we feel it’s important not to be silent and we’re here to make a little noise,” said Luke Stocking, who brought his young kids to the demonstration.
Following the march, participants formed a massive human peace sign at Nathan Phillips Square – one of 55 formed around the world.
The demonstration was organized by the Canadian Peace Alliance and the protesters were calling for leaders to bring Canadian and U.S. troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan. Similar rallies took place across the country from Halifax to Victoria , with thousands also calling on Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper to end his long-standing support for U.S. President George W. Bush.
Participants argue that Bush’s “War on Terror” has made the world less safe instead of more so. The widespread cry for peace began Friday night in Washington with a parade in that couldn’t be dampened by sleet and snow.
Christian anti-war protesters marched from the National Cathedral to the White House where they held a vigil and prayed for an end to the occupation. Dozens of people were arrested.
And all the way across the world in Australia , anti-war cries echoed as war opponents called for their country’s troops to be pulled out of Iraq . It’ll be four years Tuesday since American bombs first fell on Baghdad .
