An 84-year-old woman that was the victim of a callous hit and run Friday night, died of her injuries roughly 24 hours later.
The woman was sent to hospital with critical leg and head injuries late Friday, after she was struck while crossing the street at Yonge and Scrivener Square, just south of the railway tracks near Summerhill. She later died in hospital.
The driver of the vehicle allegedly fled the scene, but returned to check on the woman before taking off a second time.
Police were hot on the trail however, and a 39-year-old man was later arrested at a downtown hotel after surrendering to officers.
Stephen Punchard of Toronto faces charges of dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of an accident, however police say those charges could be upgraded now that the victim has died.
“We have a lot of senior residents that live in the area. This woman lived in close proximity,” revealed Sgt. Lewis Bryant.
“There’s lots of pedestrian traffic. This not unusual on a Friday evening. It’s just unusual that somebody decides to leave the scene of an accident.”
