In light of the recent school shooting rampage at Virginia Tech, police and school officials in the G.T.A are reviewing their emergency plans.
Peel police have paired up with schools in the region to come up with a special data base that would help them better respond to emergencies such as shootings. The goal is to make sure police are familiar with a school’s layout before they arrive.
“We bring up the information on our desktop commuters and officers on the road can bring up the same information through their mobile data units in cruisers. The officers would have all the information they need for that particular school before they even arrive,” explained Sgt. Tavfic Saliba.
The data base has information like aerial photographs, floor plans and maps for each of the schools in Peel region.
Minaz Jivraj, Peel Catholic School Bd. Security, explained what steps would be taken if an emergency takes place.
“The school immediately goes into lockdown procedure which means everybody in the school community is notified that there is a critical incident evolving and every student is put into a classroom, gets on the floor and doors are locked and secured.”
