Your Responses To The Shane Doan Controversy

Wow.

We have to admit that here at CityNews we didn’t expect the story of Shane Doan being named captain of Team Canada  to inspire such public debate and anger. Perhaps we should have known better.

Our viewers and readers certainly took the issue to heart though, and here are a few of your thoughts on the matter:

I just can’t believe that the government ofCanadahas nothing more important to do than bring up something that everyone else had either forgotten about or never heard about in the first place! If this is somehow a vote seeking ploy, then those voters in that MP’s neck o’ the woods should have their collective heads examined! This just shows how little the politicians in this country think of the voters. Obviously, no one inOttawabrought their “thinking caps” with them!

War in Afghanistan, gas at record heights while oil companies post record profits, a federal gun registry that is a joke, global warming, and our federal leaders decide to form a committee on whether Shane Doan said something bad two years ago? That’s right people, we pay them $150,000 a year for this.

I find it very sad, but not surprising, that the government is wasting time and our money on the alleged racial slur by Shane Doan. Whoever brought this matter forward should have been told that “it is not a government matter”, period, end of discussion.   It is a Hockey Canada matter and they will handle it.   However, unfortunately, no one seems to  have the fortitude or nerve to do this.

Everyone in the Government is so afraid of offending anyone of a different race or culture that they will waste time and money on anything. Apparently the Bloc was offended by the slur. Well, I am offended by the waste of government time and our money on this matter, but sadly that won’t matter to the government.

Are the politicians kidding? They have hit a new low in what to discuss in Parliament. If I understand correctly, Doan’s remark was “Four French refs inMontreal, Que – go figure.”

Please!!!!!

Our young refs in the GTA doing house league games receive worse comments and for much less pay ($10 – 25 per game)  If the refs cannot handle a bit of criticism directed at them or just in comment then they need to look for another place to use their skills (like house league hockey) they are not being sexually harassed, physically abused – no one is threatening their lives.

Politicians should be looking for ways to bring our troops home from war, looking into gas prices (not just passing it off as oh well), global warming, homeless people, food banks, the list goes on, there is so much that they could fill their days with trying to fix.

I’ve seen people on the news being asked how they feel about this subject and keep hearing comments that “ Canada is bi-lingual and this issue should be addressed.” What does being bi-lingual have to do with hockey, refs and players?

Do they think he should have said what he said in French since he was in Montreal ? I’ve been to Montreal , I find the people there rude and arrogant and will never go back. Do they want their own hockey league? Go to it then, but make sure they are French players, French refs and French timekeepers so that no one can be accused of “racism.”

I have to say it again: Ladies and gentlemen who run our great country – grow up and get to work!

Are you kidding me? Where does the government get off thinking that they can have a say in who captains TeamCanada! Maybe the government should spend more time worrying about the environment or the rising costs at the fuel pumps instead if attempting to make some people in a certain province happy and hope to get some more votes.

Maybe he (Shane Doan) did make the comments or maybe he did not. Who really cares?  We are talking about a game not a world peace plan. Tell the government to wake up and do something that would make a difference.

Phil

I think the House of Commons should have more important things to deal with than worry what a hockey player said to a linesman almost two years ago. It is a pathetic waste of time. What does this have to do with how TeamCanadachooses its captain?I wonder how much of a uproar we would have heard if it was a English comment made? Some people need to grow thicker skin!
