Maple Leafs Baseball Underway For Summer

When talking about things that signify the unofficial start of summer in Toronto, the Maple Leafs have to come into the conversation. No, not those Maple Leafs. They hockey variety is gone with the melting of the ice, but the Toronto Maple Leafs Baseball Club got going for another summer Sunday, and it was business as usual in the Intercounty Baseball League.

It was the Leafs and the Barrie Baycats in the opener at legendary Christie Pitts, and the fans on hand new exactly why they were there.

“It’s pretty special,” said Leafs fan Don Sprague. “It’s a wide open atmosphere and good family fun.”

Oh, and it’s free.

“There’s no admission, and on a nice day there’s not a better place in Toronto to sit down and watch a ball game,” said PA announcer Roger Lajoie. “It’s a great tradition … 39 year now and people just love it here.”

Not to mention the fact that if you wanted to say, watch a game while walking your dog you could do just that, and there aren’t too many other ballparks that can make that claim. And of course it’s just good baseball and the team’s off to a great start: Toronto beat Barrie Sunday 7-4.
