The Buffalo Sabres, who were Stanley Cup favourites in the eyes of many hockey experts, were pushed to the brink of playoff elimination on Monday night after dropping Game 3 of the NHL Eastern Conference final to the Ottawa Senators, 1-0.
The Sabres now trail the surging Sens 3-0. Ottawa can sweep the series and advance to the Cup final with a win Wednesday night at Scotiabank Place .
Daniel Alfredsson scored his ninth goal of the playoffs as Ottawa goalie Ray Emery held the Sabres scoreless through 60 minutes of play.
Alfredsson’s goal was somewhat of a fluke. Dany Heatley’s shot bounced off the back boards, hit goalie Ryan Miller’s elbow, and rolled into the crease where Alfredsson was waiting for the easy tap in.
If the Sabres hope to rally a comeback, they’ll practically need a miracle —only two teams in NHL history, the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs and the 1975 New York Islanders, have ever battled back to win a series after trailing 3-0.
