Boy Burned When Fireworks Go Off In His Bedroom

Victoria Day is now behind us but the danger it represents isn’t. A case in point – a blaze that sent Toronto firefighters speeding to 1570 Jane St . When they arrived, they discovered a 15-year-old boy’s bedroom in flames and the teen badly burned. What happened? Authorities believe the youngster was playing with lighter fluid inside his second floor room, and accidentally set off a firecracker – which then set his own bed alight.
- His mother rushed in to try and douse the rapidly spreading conflagration but she couldn’t put it out in time to stop the boy from being hurt. “Unfortunately, he set his bed on fire. Also unfortunately, he tried to put it out put it out himself instead of get help immediately and the fire got out of control,” explains District Chief John Thompson. “The young man had minor burns and was taken to North York General Hospital.”
- His mother escaped unscathed. There is a lot of smoke and flame residue left behind in the apartment, but there’s no word on a total damage estimate. Police are urging parents to keep an eagle eye on their kids as the holiday ends – and on any leftover supply of firecrackers that may still be in their homes.
