Once starved for action, Torontonians are suddenly receiving a steady diet of soccer, with the MLS Toronto FC team and now the FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada, which kicks off Saturday and runs until July 22.
Twenty-four teams from around the world will fight for the coveted title, starting with a double header featuring Brazil versus Poland at 2pm, and South Korea taking on the U.S. at 5pm from Olympic Stadium in Montreal.
Canada will see its first action Sunday in Toronto when they face Chile at BMO field.
The tourney features 52 games in six different cities.
Canada’s love affair with soccer could get even more passionate if the nation known for hockey lands the 2011 women’s World Cup, for which it is currently bidding.
As for the U-20 action, Canadian coach Dale Mitchell think Spain is the team to worry about after going undefeated in qualifying.
“They were head and shoulder above most all the teams I saw them play against,” Mitchell said.
“They’re excellent,” added Scottish co-coach Tommy Wilson. “They must be considered one of the favourites.”
