Heat Alert And Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued For GTA

It may not be as sunny as it was on Saturday, but Sunday promises to be even hotter with a heat alert in effect for the GTA. Temperatures are expected to hit the 34C range and with the humidity it’ll feel like a scorcher.

But sunshine wasn’t the only thing in the forecast as strong winds, lots of thunder and lighting hammered T.O. before noon on Sunday. In fact, a severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect for much of the GTA and parts of southern Ontario. And if you’re planning to spend your day outdoors, you might want to bring a sweatshirt as T.O. could also experience strong winds from the west gusting up to 60 km/hour.

During a heat alert people are encouraged to call or visit friends and neighbours who are at risk of suffering health consequences because of hot weather. Those at greater risk include the elderly, infants and young children, the chronically ill, and those taking certain medications.

How to beat the heat:

  • Drink lots of water and natural fruit juices
  • Stay out of the blazing sun or heat
  • Avoid strenuous physical activity outdoors
  • Go to air conditioned places: shopping malls, local libraries, air conditioned community centres
  • Never leave the elderly, children or pets unattended in a car
  • Landlords of buildings without air conditioning are encouraged to set up dedicated cool rooms and check on vulnerable tenants

Many homeless shelters will let people drop in and keep cool. During Extreme Heat Alerts, the civic centres function as Cooling Centres.
