Yoga Behind Bars

Just because you’re in prison doesn’t mean you can’t be lean and at peace with your inner core.

At least that’s the plan for some prison inmates in Hawaii, who are reaping the benefits of yoga classes offered inside three state penitentiaries.

Instructor Louisa DiGrazia says yoga helps relieve the stress of the prison routine and tends to keep the inmates healthy. In fact, she and her husband believe so strongly in the program, they’ve donated about two dozen of their own mats to the prisons.

But yoga behind bars may not be here to stay.

State prison officials say yoga classes are near the bottom of their list of budget priorities, but they promise to try to be flexible when doling out the cash for programs.
