Vigil Planned For Missing Woman While Search Continues

A desperate search for a Toronto woman who vanished a week ago in Schreiber, east of Thunder Bay, continued Saturday night. And while crews hadn’t come close to giving up, the prospects of finding 20-year-old Christina Calayca are reduced with every day that passes.

Still, rescuers emphasize that there’s much hope for the woman to emerge safely from Rainbow Falls Provincial Park, where she disappeared while jogging six days ago. Her family is very much inclined to agree.

“I don’t even think that she’s missing,” said a distraught Mario Calayca, Christina’s father. “The way I see it, that she’s on holiday … that she’s still going to come back.

“The hardest thing is not knowing what really is happening.”

Mario and about a dozen more of the young woman’s relatives drove 14 hours to be close to the search, which involves several helicopters combing the extremely dense terrain near Thunder Bay.

“From just standing in front of it it’s overwhelming because it casts a dark shadow, said cousin Bayani Caguicla. “It basically eliminates the light once you’re in there.”

The search wrapped up late Saturday, but is expected to resume Sunday as the second week of the woman’s disappearance begins.

“I want to cry but I can’t do it,” Christina’s father solemnly admitted. “Because when I start crying, I know she’s gone.”

Christina’s family and friends are holding a prayer vigil for her Wednesday night. If you would like to join them, here’s the information.

The vigil will be held August 15 at 6:15 p.m. at Prince of Peace Catholic Church at 265 Alton Towers Circle, southeast of Steeles Avenue and McCowan Road.
