Dog Goes For Dangerous Run On 401

They didn’t know where he came from. They weren’t sure where he went. But a dog and its owner have quite the tale to tell after a close call on Highway 401. Or at least a ‘tail’. Motorists, passengers and crews from the Ministry of Transportation were all involved Friday, after a dog somehow turned up in the passing lane of the eastbound 401 near Neilson Road.

There were a few heart-in-your-mouth moments caught on the Eyes MTO cameras, as the pooch somehow appeared out of nowhere, wandered into traffic, and came dangerously close to being hit a number of times. Motorists stopped and opened their car doors, trying to entice the creature to safety. Others actually got out of their vehicles – a dangerous idea – and tried to catch the dog. But with all the commotion, noise and other autos whizzing by, it only added to the poor pup’s confusion and it took off running.

The chase seemed to last forever for those trying to corral the canine, heading past Morningside and finally to Port Union Road. Highway crews spent nearly half an hour trying to corral the canine, and while they didn’t get him, they did manage to scare him off the highway. Animal control officers moved in next, looking for the missing mutt, and they finally found him resting in a backyard.

It didn’t take long for the running rover to be identified. It belonged to a man with epilepsy – and was specially trained to detect his seizures. The animal had apparently been missing for several days, after being spooked by another dog in his neighbourhood. Amazingly, he was back safe and sound – without a scratch.

Owners who are looking for a lost dog can post their message free on the Toronto Humane Society website or check to see if their missing pet has been picked up and brought in.
