Error-Prone Jays Fall To Orioles

Jesse Litsch has been one of the pleasant surprises for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2007, but the team defence behind the rookie starter, while surprising, has been anything but pleasant.

And it was more of the same Saturday, as the Blue Jays fell to the Baltimore Orioles 5-3 and Litsch was tagged with three unearned runs thanks to two costly errors.

The 33,387 fans at the Rogers Centre watched their club blow a chance to go a season-best four games over .500, and Litsch lost for the second straight appearance, coming off a 6-2 loss against Kansas City in which his team made three errors.

Actually, the Jays have been consistently shaky on defence recently, committing nine errors in their past six games.

With the bats in their hands the Blue Birds did minimal damage against Baltimore starter Steve Trachsel, who won for the first time in 10 starts. Matt Stairs slapped a solo home run but the Jays couldn’t manufacture much offence in the late innings and between the second and seventh they never got a runner into scoring position.

Heading into Sunday’s rubber match, the two teams are tied in their season series.

Of note Saturday, was the fact that one-time Blue Jays shortstop of the future Russ Adams made his first major-league appearance of the season playing third base in place of Troy Glaus.

Also, with a walk Saturday, Blue Jays DH Frank Thomas moved two behind Eddie Yost (1,614) for ninth on the career list.
