Justine Henin Wins The Rogers Cup

The number one seeded player in the tournament turned out to be the tournament’s number one player. Go figure.
Justine Henin (pictured, right) won her second Rogers Cup title Sunday in Toronto Sunday, with a 7-6 (3), 7-5 victory over Jelena Jankovic of Serbia.
The world No. 1 from Belgium needed just two hours 18 minutes to complete the win in the final of the $1.34-million tournament before a near-sellout crowd of 10,251 at the Rexall Centre on the campus of York University.
Jankovic, seeded second and ranked third in the world, got off to a strong start and had a 4-1 lead in the opening set before Henin caught up and eventually snatched the tiebreaker.
Winning the T.O. tourney is old hat for Henin, who also won here in 2003 and kept up her strong play in the second set, wearing down her opponent in a marathon that ended with her 35th career WTA Tour victory.
“I think both of us played very well and there (were) a lot of great points,” Jankovic said. “A high level of tennis, so it was great for fans to see that and I really enjoyed it.
“But unfortunately at the end … I couldn’t hang in there with her.”
Henin owns Jankovic, having won all seven career head-to-head tilts. The difference in their winnings was close to $100,000 on the day.
Earlier, Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia and Ai Sugiyama of Japan won the doubles title.
