They’re called attack ads, and with the smell of elections in the air they’re going out over the airways. However, the Conservatives are calling foul over a new set of commercials aired by the ‘ Working Families Coalition’, as they say they’re linked to Liberals.
Blair McCreadie, president of the Ontario Conservative party, says they are demanding a full investigation into the group.
“Voters should be upset,” says McCreadie. “We’ve seen what soft money campaigns have done in the American elections and I don’t think Ontario voters want the same activity here.”
The reason McCreadie and other conservatives are up in arms over the ads is that parties have spending limitations for elections, this year it is $5 million per party.
However, independent groups have no such limitations and it becomes a grey area as to who is responsible for spending that money.
“Liberals are notorious for stretching spending rules,” stated McCready at a press conference. “Another case where the McGuinty government has hijacked the rules for his partisan purposes.”
The Ontario Liberal party refused to respond, saying the entire issue was just an election ploy.
