When most people his age are running out of steam, Thomas Callender just keeps on running, fast.
So fast in fact, that the elderly man with the sinewy physique of a teen, is heading to the upcoming WMA World Championships in Riccione, Italy to compete against other seniors who haven’t yet conformed to other idea of slowing down.
Callender will represent Canada in the 100m, and 200m sprints.
“I started at age 52, the best time I ran at age 53, I did my 200m in 25.74 and my 100m in 12.2.”
He’s competed in over 200 races representing Canada, paying his own way when travelling since senior athletes are hard pressed to receive government funding.
Thomas is not just an inspiration to other senior athletes, but also to his own family. His son, Tom Jr., and grandson are both accomplished sprinters as well.
