Will FC Ever Score Another Goal?

Heading into its first season, Toronto FC fans, players and coaches had to know playing the role of new kid on the block in Major League Soccer would be a challenge. It’s doubtful however, that anyone thought it would quite this difficult.
FC has set an MLS record for futility in its first season, failing to score a goal in more than 800 minutes of play, a span that stretches 10 games back to July 7th, and hasn’t come to a close yet.
“I’d be lying if I said it’s not in the back of my head, but you’ve got to try and block it out the best you can,” said forward Andrea Lombardo. “That’s what’s being a professional is all about.”
The coaching staff has promised this off-season’s focus will be scouring Europe and the United States for a little more offensive firepower. Until then, head coach Mo Johnston’s had to develop a sense of humour about the whole situation.
“He’s been taking the weekends off,” Johnston joked Tuesday about the rather bored scoreboard operator at BMO Field. “I never even knew there was someone up there working it.”
And when the day finally comes, what kind of celebration can we expect?
“I might get naked … just lose it on the field,” said defender Adam Braz.
In the meantime, all FC players and staff are asking for patience from fans, who they still insist are the best around.
“They keep coming and support us and they want us to score,” Brazz added. “We’re going to do our best to give them a goal.”
Toronto FC’s next game is Saturday against the Columbus Crew at BMO Field.
