Singer Britney Spears has been ordered by a judge to undergo drug and alcohol testing twice a week as part of her custody fight with ex-husband Kevin Federline.
Only the troubled pop singer, and not Federline, was instructed to submit to the tests. Both parents are required to avoid drinking and drugs both around their children and 12 hours before caring for them.
“Based on the evidence presented, the court finds that there is a habitual, frequent and continuous use of controlled substances and alcohol” by Spears, Superior Court Judge Scott M. Gordon said in court papers.
Spears must also meet for eight hours a week with a “parenting coach” who will report back to the court on her abilities. Both parents must refrain from making “derogatory remarks” about the other while with their children, and they must avoid using “corporal punishment” to discipline them.
Spears and Federline married in October 2004. Their divorce became official in July after Spears filed the paperwork last November. They currently have joint custody of their two sons – Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1 – but Federline wants a larger share of custody.
Spears’s increasingly erratic behaviour – including shaving her head and beating a car with an umbrella – has made tabloid headlines in recent months.
