Fire Fallout At Victoria Park And Danforth

It started with a fire. And now, there’s smoke. Residents in the Victoria Park and Danforth area – and beyond – are complaining of breathing problems, ashy lawns, even corroded paint on their cars.
Fire crews were up all night battling the blaze. While residents are grateful, all that sooty water ended up in yards and basements all along Lucy Avenue.
That’s not all. The fire itself caused huge problems for resident Doug Hysay. He said the sky was “all black.and the smell was horrid.” He was coughing all night. In the picture above, he holds a piece of ash he found in his yard.
The Ministry of the Environment was out Friday morning collecting air samples, but wouldn’t say what they were testing for. Toronto Public Health says there will be no lasting health effects. Just in case, the city will be hosing down playground equipment and changing the sand.
One resident said “bits of rubber” had fallen on his car and eaten away at the paint. Others had soot all over their house and front steps.
The Ministry of the Environment should have the air quality results in the coming week.
