As far as the playoffs go, the Toronto Argonauts can be sure of one thing: they’ve got second place in the CFL’s East Division all locked up.
The Boatmen made sure of that Saturday, after completing a two-game sweep of the fading Montreal Alouettes with a 16-9 victory at Olympic Stadium. The Argos also beat the Als 35-17 last week in Toronto .
It was a solid, though not particularly impressive victory for Toronto , who continues to surge while Montreal goes in the opposite direction with five losses over six games. Meanwhile Toronto has won five straight games and seven of their last eight to sit one point behind first-place Winnipeg .
The big score on the afternoon came when Argos pivot Michael Bishop threw a touchdown pass to Arland Bruce. Montreal had little answer against a swarming Toronto defence.
Noel Prefontaine added three field goals for Toronto and the defence forced four of the turnovers. The Als managed only two Damon Duval field goals, a single and a safety.
Toronto has two more games on its regular season schedule, the biggest of which is next Saturday at home against the Blue Bombers.
