Premier Dalton McGuinty appears to have named a replacement for former Finance Minister Greg Sorbara, just hours before his new cabinet is sworn in at Queen’s Park on Tuesday.
Dwight Duncan (pictured) will take charge of the portfolio, sources predicted Monday evening. The move returns him to a position the political veteran held briefly in 2005.
Sorbara shocked party members when he suddenly resigned last Friday, saying he wanted to spend more time with his family. Now Duncan will move over from the Energy portfolio, one of only a couple set to shuffle for McGuinty’s new term.
Another is Attorney General Michael Bryant, who will reportedly become the province’s new minister of aboriginal affairs — a position of significance as the re-elected Liberals continue to wrestle with growing First Nations unrest tied to a standoff in Caledonia almost two years old.
“He’s one of our brightest people in cabinet and one of the most skilled communicators,” a source said of Bryant.
Few other major cabinet moves are being predicted and it’s expected George Smitherman will remain as health minister and Kathleen Wynne will stay on as education minister.
