With just 4:12 to go in a tie game, it looked like the Toronto Maple Leafs caught a huge break when the New Jersey Devils were handed a minor penalty. But John Madden’s short-handed goal broke the tie and dashed Leaf hopes, as the Devils went on to defeat the Buds 3-2 on Friday night.
Zach Parise added the insurance market minutes later.
David Clarkson scored the other Jersey goal and Martin Brodeur was solid, stopping 26 shots.
Alex Steen and Mats Sundin replied for the Buds, who dropped their second straight game.
