Routine Traffic Stop Turns Into Brief Chase

What started as a simple traffic stop escalated into a major accident, an all out search and the breakout of the K9 unit on a Toronto street Friday. It began and ended at Mortimer and Binswood, not far from Coxwell Ave., around 4pm.

Cops were checking on an apparent traffic violation when the driver of the vehicle they’d pulled over suddenly hit the gas and tried to speed off. He didn’t get far. Just a few short seconds down the road, the fleeing vehicle rammed into another car driven by a very surprised woman.

But this chase had only begun. Seeing that their getaway plans were foiled by a now twisted clump of metal, the two people in the first automobile flung open the doors and took off running. Witnesses couldn’t believe what they were seeing. “He slammed on his brakes and slammed right into her,” remembers Michelle King. “And she couldn’t get out of the car. So my friend had to help her out.”

Cops immediately called in the dogs to try and catch the scent and track the driver and his passenger. In one case it worked, in the other it didn’t. A 29-year-old man is in police custody. But a second male, who was in the passenger seat, is long gone. Police are still looking for him.

They later learned the car they’d stopped was stolen, a likely explanation for the reaction of the suspects.

The innocent woman in the other vehicle was shaken up but fortunately wasn’t hurt.
