DVP Reopens Following Rollover That Sparks SIU Investigation

A section of the DVP was closed off for much of an already hectic Sunday, while a police investigation created havoc on the roads for the thousands of motorists pouring into the city for the Santa Claus Parade and the Argos and Raptors games.

Lanes in both directions have since re-opened, even as the province’s Special Investigations Unit continues to probe a rollover that reportedly led to the death of one man.

At least two officers suffered minor injuries in an altercation with the driver in the moments leading up to the accident, but they’re expected to be okay.

“We received information that the driver fled the scene. A number of officers responded from traffic services and they had some sort of altercation with the driver. As a result, this has now been declared an SIU matter. The driver is deceased,” said Insp. Mario DiTommaso.

The incident happened just north of Don Mills Road around 7:30am. The SIU is remaining tight-lipped about specifics, since they’re called in anytime a meeting between police and civilians results in a death.

“This matter has now been declared an SIU matter,” Insp. DiTommaso said. “I will not be commenting any further on that.”

Police haven’t released the driver’s name or age.
