Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor was in critical condition Monday, after he was reportedly shot in his Florida home.
Miami-Dade County police officers were dispatched to Taylor’s home at about 1:45 a.m. where he was found suffering from a gunshot wound. He was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Taylor’s NFL club released a statement Monday, saying he was undergoing treatment at the Miami hospital while police investigated.
Taylor has a home in the Miami suburb of Palmetto Bay that he bought for $900,000 two years ago. The 24-year-old is in his fourth season with the Redskins after playing collegiate ball at the University of Miami where he earned all-American honours in 2003. He leads the team with two interceptions, but has missed the last two games with a knee injury.
It’s not the first time Taylor has been connected to guns and violence. In 2005, he was accused of brandishing a firearm at a man and repeatedly hitting him during a fight that broke out after Taylor and some friends went looking for the people who had allegedly stolen his all-terrain vehicles.
Taylor eventually struck a deal with prosecutors who agreed to drop felony charges against him and pleaded no contest to two misdemeanours in the assault case and was sentenced to 18 months probation.
