It was a schedule that robbed fans in some cities from seeing Sidney Crosby for years, and prevented Canadian teams like the Toronto Maple Leafs and Vancouver Canucks from clashing over the course of an entire season. But all that will soon change after the NHL voted to alter their controversial scheduling format on Thursday night, ending a year-long debate among owners, players, and fans.
The league decided to return to the pre-lockout system, which features six games against each divisional opponent rather than the current eight, but more importantly guarantees at least one game every year against the other conference teams.
The 82-game schedule next season will see a total 24 divisional games, with 40 against the rest of the conference and another 18 versus the other conference.
